Sexist assumptions

One of my colleagues was tasked with interviewing and writing about a woman. It turns out that she had some medical experience or job. Despite the interviewee saying she went to “medical school,” the colleague assumed she was a nurse even though she never said she was a nurse. Turns out she is an M.D. Sexist assumption.

“We like this girl”

A recruiter contacted me about an open position he thought I’d be good for. I agreed to speak with the hiring manager, who was also the CEO. It was a decent role, managerial and strategic nature, similar to what I do now. After the interview, the recruiter called me and said the CEO was like “We really like this girl.” This might sound like a good thing, but when you’re being referred to as a “girl” when you’re interviewing with a company for a strategic management position, it’s off-putting. They’d never say, “We like this boy” if speaking of or to a male candidate. (I should note that I’m not sure if this was the recruiter’s language or the hiring manager, either way, not great.)
